Claude VonStroke, otherwise known as Barclay Crenshaw, is the head of the San Francisco-based record label, Dirty Bird. A product of the internet generation, Crenshaw saw his first tufts of fame through an instructional DVD on how to be a DJ — growing up, young Barclay was determined to make it as a hip-hop DJ; as this dream began to take on a new name, house music, he decided to make a video that would have answered all the questions he had as a young’n. In the process of filming DJs from around the world, he also learned a lot about running his own music label.

Beat That Bird (feat. Justin Martin) by Claude VonStroke by dirtybird

Dirty Bird’s signature blend of hip-hop inspired, jacking tech-house beats vibrate the speakers of clubs all around the world. The label gained it’s notoriety through Crenshaw’s ‘Deep Throat’ back in 2005, and traces it’s roots to an original push of promotion through the European dance music scene. It wasn’t long before the recognition trickled its way back into the states as people sought after these bass heavy, Cali-grown beats. With an impressive roster of artists that are making waves in their own right, it’s no wonder this group of tech-house savants can’t manage to put out a bad record. Release after release, they have proved their name, and the future shows no boundaries for these dirty birds!

We had a chance to catch up with Barclay right before his gig at the infamous Control down in LA. Check out the interview after the jump!

My Lady Don’t Mind

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

Huge release dropped on Crux recently. Blatta & Inesha take their sound to a new Techno, which is supplemented by their mastery of the electro boom. Side A’s “My Lady Don’t Mind” is future Techno / Disco on acid with the usual dose of B&I humor! Side B’s “Daddy’s Home” is a super combo from the sicilian electro dons, including their olive-loving brother, Doc Trashz.

On remix duty is a special bunch of amazing talent. Veteran Crux artist, Modek displays his unique badass electro from belgium, while Tomorrow’s superstars, 2 Guys in Venice, drop an experimental percussive house version straight from the floating city. And from one of the last mediterranean countries not engulfed in flames, we have Gooseflesh’s bomb of electro house with an exotic Turkish touch.

As a little bonus track B&I step it down a notch with an electro hip hop rave number. Bringing back his roots as a world famous scratch DJ, Inesha called upon his brother of the turntables..the mighty Tayone to collaborate on this little gem.

Footjam Logo MEDIUM RED

One of my broducers (I recently coined this term for all my ‘producer bros’) from Australia, Brent Nasternak, recently dropped a nice little techno/electro EP. Reminds me a bit of my earlier days getting into the music — the latter two tracks even seem to have a bit of an acid vibe to ‘em. The last tune on the EP, ‘Sketch’ is my favorite. The track bounces back between booming sub bass and acid stabs and really holds a strong techno flavor throughout. This guy makes all kinds of different music, so don’t hesitate to check out his soundcloud and see what he’s been up to!

Here are some soundcloud previews:

Malfunkshun

Dug up quite the interesting track from Wongo the other day. Not his normal stuff here. It’s kind of deep, kind of dark, and very techno — all spruced up with a bit of fidget. I recognize samples from a cash register and those are just a couple of the many sounds that bounce their way throughout this track. Very awesome stuff!

Wongo – Malfunkshun

Oliver Leigh smashed it on this next one. I love this kid’s percussion, and it goes without saying that he knows how to twist up a proper wobble. Furthermore, the stabbed out vocals are prime. Call up Captain Jack and get ready to jerk that body harder than Jamaican-cooked chicken! Woooo-weeeee! [Not entirely sure if this is an original or a remix? It came across with him as the artist and remixer.. ]

Oliver Leigh – I Know You Got Some (Oliver Leigh’s Jacked Up Remix)

Biggun from the Mass Brothers up last to round out this post. I believe they’re from somewhere in southern California. Thanks to Jay Fidget for showing me the way on these dudes. Get ready for booming sidechain bass, dutch bloopers, and chop-o-matic vocals about “dem Nikes.” Really enjoying the melding of dutch sounds and big bass (like the recently posted tune from Bass N Whomps).

Snatch – Nikes (The Mass Brothers Remix)

Delicious!

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

One of my favorite groups, Simian Mobile Disco, just released a single from their forthcoming album. The song is called “Aspic” after the food of the same name. Unlike the dish, this track is delicious!
