VonWhoa!

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Claude VonStroke, otherwise known as Barclay Crenshaw, is the head of the San Francisco-based record label, Dirty Bird. A product of the internet generation, Crenshaw saw his first tufts of fame through an instructional DVD on how to be a DJ — growing up, young Barclay was determined to make it as a hip-hop DJ; as this dream began to take on a new name, house music, he decided to make a video that would have answered all the questions he had as a young’n. In the process of filming DJs from around the world, he also learned a lot about running his own music label.

Beat That Bird (feat. Justin Martin) by Claude VonStroke by dirtybird

Dirty Bird’s signature blend of hip-hop inspired, jacking tech-house beats vibrate the speakers of clubs all around the world. The label gained it’s notoriety through Crenshaw’s ‘Deep Throat’ back in 2005, and traces it’s roots to an original push of promotion through the European dance music scene. It wasn’t long before the recognition trickled its way back into the states as people sought after these bass heavy, Cali-grown beats. With an impressive roster of artists that are making waves in their own right, it’s no wonder this group of tech-house savants can’t manage to put out a bad record. Release after release, they have proved their name, and the future shows no boundaries for these dirty birds!

We had a chance to catch up with Barclay right before his gig at the infamous Control down in LA. Check out the interview after the jump!

I must say this new artist feature hits close to my cold, machine heart. K-THEORY is the formation of two personality polar opposites into one farm fresh factory of boom. The California bay area duo represent a two armed, multi-genre speaking monster of smash, burning up the blogosphere, quickly amassing a loyal army of followers one venue at a time.

Flatline (Clip) by K-Theory

On one half we have a silver-tongued whirlwind of Jameson & Hedonism, accented by an undeniable ability to accumulate intelligent, talented, beautiful individuals to join his exclusive collective dubbed ‘NUPA’ (No Ugly People Allowed). By day, he is a talent curator for two of the hottest event companies of San Francisco Nightlife [TORQ SF | EPR], but by night a glitz & glamor beat transmitter. This is Dylan.

Funk Symphony (Clip) by K-Theory

The other limb is a quiet, quirky, sound engineer extraordinaire with a dark past spanning from psychedelic trippindicular trance to downtempo lurking dubstep. He is a mad scientist with an affinity for grinding, growling productions to grate faces on soundwaves. Say hello to Dustin.

(SAN FRANCISCO, USA) You are tried and tested warriors of the night.

Packed into the steaming corridors of 525 Harrison Street , otherwise known as ‘The Factory’, masses of party monsters rioted & raved till the early morning. The line crept around the venue as thousands journeyed to take part in arguably the largest and most anticipated Dubstep massive in San Francisco’s history, WOBBLELAND. Performances from industry heavyweights Nero, Skrillex, Datsik, 12th Planet, Jakwob, and Kastle shook enthralled recipients from head to toe. Participants can thank VITAL SC for releasing a filthy, neon Armageddon upon an ecstatic, hot & sweaty audience.

Enough flashbacks, for everyone who bore testament to the following moments at Wobbleland, close your eyes and listen. For everyone else, close your eyes and drool.

Big Perm EP

First off, biggups to Gosia Herman of Disocbelle Records for contacting us with information about this release. We are huge Dirtybird / Jackmode fans over here at CYV™ so I am SO excited to talk to you about Worthy’s latest peak-time perm-jacker.

Discobelle’s new release from San Francisco’s Worthy is a percolating tech-house ass shaker infused with enough oomph to make you sweat until you’ve messed up your hair. An infectious vocal sample and an uncontainable bubbling vibe makes this track some really prime jacked up tech-house.

Accompanying the original, we’ve got three great remixes to round out the package from Worthy – Harvard Bass, Renaissance Man and Femme En Fourrure. First up, Harvard Bass gives a chunky, infectious bruiser that strikes a perfect balance between the deeper dancefloors and the uncontrollable, messier ones. Then, architects-turned-house-music-innovators Renaissance Man turn Worthy’s track into a sparse and icy percussive techno journey, continuing to push house music to deeper, stranger places. Finally and also from Helsinki, Femme En Fourrure choose to let things simmer a bit with a druggy pulse and some signature female vocals evoking Laura Palmer’s from Twin Peaks if she was making dance music.
