Electro and beyond by way of Finland.

It seems as though any sound is up for grabs in Renaissance Man’s studio. The Finnish duo sampled spraycans on their 2009 debut through Dubsided; used scat singers and (synthesized) insects on Made to Play; and chopped-up religious chants via Sound Pellegrino. Their forthcoming album, The Renaissance Man Project, runs even further with this approach. Ticking clocks, ping-pong balls, fireworks and sitars are just a few of the overt sonic sources, although many of the tear-out inclinations of Downtown and Jaxxon’s previous releases have been scrubbed from the palette, leaving behind an air of experimentation and genre explorations.

The album might not be suffused with the kind of classic electro flavours present throughout RA.273, but that just serves to illustrate the breadth of Renaissance Man’s purview these days.

What have you been up to recently?

Finishing an album, making another album, enjoying the perks of global warming in Helsinki, preparing our first live show, making a video, writing a book.

How and where was the mix recorded?

Live on a Sunday morning on a rusty container ship hosting a 72-hour fetish party, sailing in the extra-legal international waters of the Baltic Sea. Or on Ableton Live in Ville’s flat in Berlin. One can believe either of the stories but the first-mentioned provides a better mental setting for its full appreciation.

Can you tell us about the idea behind the mix?

It’s a concept-free representation of what we are playing out at the moment; a healthy dose of different styles, old and new.

Where are you at musically at the moment? There seems to a strong
(proper) electro current running through the mix.

True. Lately we have found ourselves digging, playing and rediscovering a lot of electro-ish stuff. Growing up in the Finnish electronic music scene one could not avoid the influence of artists such as Mr. Velcro Fastener, Mono Junk, ImatranVoima, Helsinki Bass Machine (who is, by the way, featuring under a different name on our upcoming album) and their likes. Not to speak of the DJ’ing of K-X-P’s KaukoLampi or the legendary Helsinki Turbo parties. So it’s in our blood but perhaps a bit more explicit than earlier.

What was behind your decision to leave Helsinki?

Well only half of RM (Ville) left Helsinki more permanently. It’s the usual story, being a music producer, moving to Berlin. Helsinki is a small city and Finland a small country relatively far away from the rest of the European “scene.” It still has great events (like Flow Festival) and a few nice clubs, but we find ourselves playing mainly elsewhere.

What are you up to next?

Touring both DJ’ing and with our live show. Ville is also working on a new musical project, Millennium, with City Slang artist Norman Palm and on a mysterious project called Madgermany with writer Ingo Niermann. Martti’s book Solution Finland: The Welfare Game will be out in the fall on Sternberg Press. We are also working on a literary compendium to the album with the London-based design collective Åbäke. And of course, new Renaissance Man material is already in the works.

Big Perm EP

First off, biggups to Gosia Herman of Disocbelle Records for contacting us with information about this release. We are huge Dirtybird / Jackmode fans over here at CYV™ so I am SO excited to talk to you about Worthy’s latest peak-time perm-jacker.

Discobelle’s new release from San Francisco’s Worthy is a percolating tech-house ass shaker infused with enough oomph to make you sweat until you’ve messed up your hair. An infectious vocal sample and an uncontainable bubbling vibe makes this track some really prime jacked up tech-house.

Accompanying the original, we’ve got three great remixes to round out the package from Worthy – Harvard Bass, Renaissance Man and Femme En Fourrure. First up, Harvard Bass gives a chunky, infectious bruiser that strikes a perfect balance between the deeper dancefloors and the uncontrollable, messier ones. Then, architects-turned-house-music-innovators Renaissance Man turn Worthy’s track into a sparse and icy percussive techno journey, continuing to push house music to deeper, stranger places. Finally and also from Helsinki, Femme En Fourrure choose to let things simmer a bit with a druggy pulse and some signature female vocals evoking Laura Palmer’s from Twin Peaks if she was making dance music.

Sixpack? No son..MIXPAK!

Mixpak Records is a taste-making hub for our time. Modern, dimensional, and mosaic-like, Mixpak brings together influences from the worlds of club music, dancehall, rap and beyond and gives them the shared roof of a common home. Like Raphael’s famous painting, The School of Athens, the Mixpak artists represent a powerhouse of sounds that exhibit the label’s distinct branches of breakthrough urban and electronic music, as well as alternative culture.

With brand new releases slated for this fall and winter, Mixpak Records is revving up to be the record label to watch for in 2011. Founded by Dre Skull in early 2009, the Brooklyn-based imprint is the natural extension of both his work as a producer exploring numerous genres and his extensive international touring as a DJ.

As Dre Skull describes: “When I started Mixpak, I wanted to build something that could bridge many different worlds. With the music industry undergoing some cataclysmic shifts, there are interesting opportunities for creativity and we’re trying to play in that space”.

Here are my favorites from the Mixpak Sampler:
Sissy Nobby – Lay Me Down (Renaissance Man Remix)
Dre Skull – Gone Too Far ft. Sizzla (Buraka Som Sistema Remix)
Cory Blaine – Hot Plate (DJ Nephets Remix)

(Molotov) Cocktail

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

dvDkK

In the past week I’ve definitely fallen behind on some blogging. I’m going to attempt to catch up by offering some music that touches down on a bunch of different genres — perhaps a “cocktail” of sorts. Not going to go into lengthy details on each track, just know that this is CYV™ and you best be grabbin’ all these things!

Discovered these cats through Soundcloud. This tune is a massive dub face-melter. They are also the reason for the awesome post image!
Dead Commies – Molotov3

Bass-filled R&B Jam to get them hunniez movin.
Heavyfeet ft. Rod Hotly & Kid Bliss – Last Two People

Red Squad always delivers. This is some quality fidget-grind with gangster vox sprinkled throughout.
RedSquad – Right Here

Jacked up fidget remake of Ava Rose’s “Say Yeah.” Has some tribal-esque vibe worked in too. Niiiice!
Ava Rose – Say Yeah (Jack Smith Bass Infected Remix)

Uh..so pretty much anything Renaissance Man touches turns to gold, so grab this bootleg rework of Windowlicker.
Aphex Twin – Windowlicker (Renaissance Man Bootcut)

Tech-house infused with a little bit of that jack jack jack! (Thanks Disturbed Beats!)
The Squatters Ft. Dutch Courage – Superfly (Little Bastard & ZubaGroove Remix)

This next track was my favorite out of the whole EP, but the rest are fantastic too. And again, thanks to Disturbed Beats for flowing me this one. Check out their blog for the rest!
Tombstone Ft. Larry Tee & Alexander Technique – Give ‘Em The Bizness (The Potato Heads Remix)

And this last one is a bit hard to define. I’d say it’s something along the lines of “Fidge-Hop.” It’s dope as all hell — perfect for droppin’ a hip hop vocal over. I might make an attempt in the near future! (And possibly an attempt to produce something in this realm)
Sean Taylor – Curious

Straight From the Spring: Sound Pellegrino

Scion A/V Presents: Sound Pellegrino – Straight From The Spring by ScionAV

A WORD BY TEKI LATEX ABOUT SOUND PELLEGRINO

Sound Pellegrino’s sonic identity is a paradox.
When I play the current house and techno music that I like to my French “banging electro” friends, they think it’s minimal. When I play it to minimal DJs, they think it bangs too hard. We love hard stuff when it’s creative and groovy, and we love minimalist music when it’s not boring nore serious. The first three Sound Pellegrino releases totally embody that state of mind.
