Good In The Hood | Dynamics

Saturday, December 3rd, 2011

The best music is grown in California. Good In The Hood showcases the freshest crops of dedicated Bay Area musicians and sound engineers, each carving out their own personal piece of the musicsphere. They may be young, new, and still deciding who they want to be, but the point is someday we feel they will figure it out and it will be epic. Till then, read up, listen up, dance and tell your friends.

Dynamics

Let’s talk about sexy. Let’s talk about silky, sweet seduction. Turn down the “in your face” and turn up the “on your knees.” The genres and sub-genres spanning Indie Electro, Disco House & beyond are almost like the romance languages of dance music. Their masters are few and far between. Artists like A-Trak, AC Slater, and Treasure Fingers are able to wield their sounds properly so that even the most resistant recipient won’t be able to avoid feeling coy, happy, and lustful. We are no stranger to San Francisco talent here at CYV so it shouldn’t surprise you that our latest disco fix is provided by Dynamics, a pair of genuine boogie aficionados; we often see them alongside SF nightlife favorites Realboy or performing at the famed Our House Records events. In a sea of newly minted DJ BRO’s mashing Beatport’s Top 100 Dubstep / Electro charts, this duo is stepping way outside the box & turning it into a damn disco ball.

The Lizard EP

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

As usual, Will Bailey totally killed it while no one was looking. Or at least I wasn’t looking. Just when you thought Will had already put out enough ingenious floor whompers this year and deserved a lengthy sabbatical, here comes this “Lizard EP,” showcasing five new pieces. Each of these tracks prove Will’s out-of-this-world innovative powers a dozen times over.

Out of the five, we’ve got three electro house, one moombahton, and one “down tempo spaceship electro” (“Spaceship Funk”), which is probably intended to be dropped during moombahton sets.

Meanwhile, “Offline” starts with big-room Swedish-house-style synth hooks (something completely unexpected from the dirt master Will Bailey), but wait it out about a minute and a quarter because a surprise awaits you.

“Warehouse,” sonically, seems to be a story about two reptilian android creatures: One is very grumpy about being woken up by the other, so the other decides to irritate him even further by throwing sour gummy worms at his head. Hilarity ensues.

“Mean Streets” is – as declared by the genre label Will placed on this one – a story about the childish temper tantrum of a raging warlord in feudal England. Will knows a lot about these things because he himself is English.

The title track for this EP, “Lizard,” is simply moombah done right. It kind of embodies where moombahton is at right now but completely picks up the slack where a lot of other moombahton tracks are lacking.

It’s Only Jack Jones!

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

With a track that reached JunoDownload’s Top 10 Electro House chart this summer and radio airplay by Kissy Sell Out last month, Only Jack Jones of Manchester, UK, is seeing some well-deserved pay-off for his hard work! He runs two record labels as well as an affordable dance music mastering service, all while releasing music on WoNKed Records, Move To Trash Recordings, Digital Storm Records, Clubstream Records, and Shabang! Records.

I’ve opted to post the more fidgetty side of his production because it is the sickest to me… but you can also hear some very solid electro house and dubstep on his Soundcloud.

I’ll also have to include the Stupid Fresh & LKiD remix of Heavyweight Fighter because it’s one of the best songs I’ve ever heard….

EPR 174 | AC Slater + Darth & Vader

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

A line has been crossed, one of my favorite weekly bump and grind fest’s has brought my focus for the week to a screeching halt. All I can think about is seeing two of my EDM heroes throw down shredding sets for what will be a steaming, packed night at 715 Harrison Street, home of EPR.

First up we have Brazilian complextro maestros, Darth & Vader; almost never seen in the United States, the duo will be making a stop to brand SF with their own style of in your face, high-tempo, electro assaults. With a heavy stockpile of remixes & original productions you can count on breaking it down from the start of their set till the end, when a club music legend will take the decks bringing everyone with him on a banging, bouncy ride.

The Brookyln bass bad boy AC Slater will be up next, gracing all of us with his signature blend of bassline, fidget, and most likely some dubstep. I promise you it will definitely be very, very sexy as the Trouble & Bass record don always delivers.

To round it off, I will supporting my idols with a performance earlier in the night as Robot Mafia. Stop by, bring a friend, do something questionable in the shadows of a club. Here are a few mixes if you can’t wait to boogie.

X-Rated

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

Excision’s album dropped this month, and it’s as sick as you would expect. “X-Rated” affirms Excision’s range of expertise, unveiling his ability to make bouncy electro house tracks as opposed to dubstep and drum & bass.

The first electro house track on the album, “Ohhh Nooo,” is a “heaving 4×4 machination that sets the bassline glitches against a propulsive drum line.” Meanwhile, “Swerve,” featuring Downlink, boasts “a chugging bassline” that “jut[s] through the core of the track.”
